TURKEY’s transport, maritime and communications minister Mr Ahmet Arslan announced on November 29 the start of a project to build 500 main line electric locomotives by 2023.

The E-5000 locomotive will be produced by Tubitak Marmara Research Centre (MAM) and Tülomsaş, a subsidiary of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), in cooperation with Istanbul Technical University. A team of 162 engineers is working on the project.

The E-5000 locomotive will have an ac traction system, an output of 5MW and a maximum speed of160km/h. A prototype will be built first followed by an initial batch of 20 locomotives.

This is latest in a series of projects to produce Turkish-designed locomotives, rolling stock and signalling equipment, and follows the National Diesel Train Set, National Diesel Engine, E-1000 National Electric Locomotive, National Freight Wagon and National Signalling System.
